What I Like About Rehab: Part 1

I feel like I’m getting ready to come out of hibernation. I’m not sleeping as much as a bear. But my activities have been modified more than I imagined. I just did my fifth mountain bike trail patrol from a picnic bench. Keith, aka the Governor, continues to be great company so it’s sort of the same helping people from the parking lot. On Monday, I did a 2.25-mile hike around a lake with 734’s Dad in 40 minutes and carefully relied on my right leg to lower myself down a slight hill. I miss the rush of endorphins that comes from being winded and sweaty.

Fortunately, the one thing that is kicking my butt these days is rehab. They are a super nice bunch of people. All of them. The P.T.s, the P.T. aides, the Pilates instructors, the assistants – they work me for about two hours a session. I may not be able to run right now, but I’m guessing if I could, I’d be faster. I can feel the glutes, abductors and adductors that I’ve never had before.

I asked my P.T. “How do you negotiate activity with your doctor?” “Don’t let your doctor treat you like a middle-aged lady. Make sure he understands you’re an athlete.” So far, he has been good. But I thought that was worth passing on. Of course, if it turns out my knee has seriously de-generated, there won’t be anything to negotiate.

She also gave me the rundown of what to expect after the surgery. I probably won’t be able to drive for a couple of weeks. I’ll start rehab right away, three times a week. And then she said, “Pretty soon, you’ll be back on the bike again, and we’ll start working your core and other areas, too.” THAT made me giddy.
