Last week, I came down with a nasty cough. At first, I thought it was this little allergy thing that sometimes hits me in the fall. But it was a bug buggin’ me. Two days after my best speed workout of the year, my training came to a halt. Plan B.
The positive side to it? It gave me a chance to work on my own version of Clean House (see post below). Call it Clean Itty-Bitty-Apartment-With-an-Ocean-View. It gave me a chance to pick through my knickknacks and desk files, de-clutter, dust, and otherwise straighten up. I even resorted to cleaning the little bag of garden tools my mom gave me. (I know, over-the-top, but taking care of the little sentimental things feels good too.) I hung some enlargements of my photography from Alaska, including this shot shown above and watched entirely too much TV. There’s still plenty to do, but I’m excited to see light at the end of the tunnel.
Sunday morning, I woke up with a swollen knee. My boney knee cap is unrecognizable. What gives? No training for four days and my body revolts? Slept on it wrong? Plan C. No running or biking for me this week. I’m not limping, so I’m hoping this is a minor setback. Coach Beth told me “There’s still hope. You can stay in shape swimming and aqua jogging.” So that’s what I’ll do.
The positive side? I will not burn out on running this year. And I’m inspired about swimming more again after watching Sandy and her buds in the Naples Island 1.4-mile swim on Sunday. I tried to cheer them on but it came out like a beached-seal squeal.
Last night, I did my first aqua jogging workout. It was back-to-school night, forcing me to park blocks away on of all things “Taper Street.” Sure feels like the universe is telling me to take a break. I type with a wry, little grin.
