My Orange Crush – Part I

Last Sunday, I finally had the opportunity to ride my dream mountain bike — a Santa Cruz Blur XC. And it’s mine. I’ve waited 12 long years for a new mountain bike.

Okay, I have to admit, orange wasn’t my first choice for a color. But it fits. After all, that’s my alma mater Syracuse’s color. And if I really end up in a jam, it’ll be easier to find me.

Suffice it to say, this one is a huge upgrade over my antique Giant ATX 860 hard tail. It was sort of like going from an old Chevy to…a Formula 1 racecar. This thing hugged the trail like nothing I’ve ever ridden before.

I felt safer on it. I wasn’t getting bounced around on it like my old steed. As the Governor said, “Now, you can aim at rocks.” I was constantly avoiding anything that would throw me off balance before. Or worse, I’d come to a screeching halt, slamming the pedal into the back of my calf and leaving a nice, attractive bruise every time I hit the trials.

I was a new woman on this Santa Cruz Blur. I found myself leaning into corners on fast declines, climbing hills that were previously my nemesis, and descending hills that I usually walked with trepidation. Equipment really does make a difference. Now, I can’t wait for my do-over at X-terra.
