Labor(ing) Day Run

Yesterday was once again the hottest day of the year here. My friends who live near the park said it reached 100 degrees at 3:00 p.m. When we started at 6:00 am., it wasn’t much cooler. We finished a little after 11:00 a.m. In that time, we could’ve driven to San Francisco.

My training partner, Gayla, is definitely road trip worthy. There aren’t many people I can talk to for that many hours. Sure makes the miles go by quickly – even if they’re really not.

We played it safe with regularly trips to the car to fill our Badwater Bandanas with ice, and replenish our packs with fluids. Along the way we had Endurolites, Gu and tried the new Accelerade Gels (tasty flavors).

We planned to do 22. Then as the morning went on and we rethought our schedules (there may be a sprint tri on our calendar), we decided to up it to 23.

The heat took its toll on me for sure. Despite our best efforts, I had the chills in the last mile. So we walked. We were ready to walk. Yup, this training run felt just like a marathon. And today, I’m hobbling around my little apartment, thinking strategically before I make a move, “Do you really need to get up?” Hmmm, maybe I won’t have a second cup!
