I Couldn’t be Prouder

My niece, Lizzy, graduated from the 8th grade this morning. It was a big morning for this kid. As Class President, she led the pledge of allegiance and gave the opening speech.

Throughout the morning, this little spitfire received several awards:

American Spirit Certificate for Outstanding Citizenship and High Sense of Accomplishment

Scholarship Society for a GPA above 3.5 for Six Straight Semesters

Presidential Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence – Gold

(Last week, she received awards for music and writing.)

The ceremony went on for two hours. I admit, sometimes my mind wandered to the challenges of the next two days. Tonight my buddy Kristen is keeping me company for my 14-mile long run. Then, tomorrow morning at 6:15 a.m. I’m supposed to go for an open water swim in the ocean with Coach Beth and the gang. Not sure which I hate more – waves or early mornings. (I never said I was a natural-born triathlete!)

A Michael Jordan quote read by her principal put all of that back into perspective.

“Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.”

Okay, switch out "wall" for "wave."
