The Christmas Spirit

A few days ago, I took my nephew Noah to his doc appointment. Afterwards, I took him to Noah’s Bagels for a snack. He’s 16 – always hungry and obsessed with fixed gear bikes.

This, of course, gives us something to bond over. He knows he has an interested ear if pedals are involved. The conversation went something like this…

“Auntie, I’m building Lizzy (his little sister) a fixed gear bike for Christmas. I bought a used frame. I’m going to sand it and prime it and paint it a cool color. Then I’m going to take off the extra chain rings and the derailleur, add a new seat, seat stem and handlebars.”

He said it with the same sing-songy enthusiasm that he’s had since he was a little boy. He beamed with the thought of putting this thing together for his little sis’.

Then I asked, “So what are you going to give O’Neill?” (His big brother.)

“A hug!” he replied with a big laugh.

A couple of days later I took him to the hardware store for primer and yellow/cream colored paint – something fitting an old Rolls-Royce. He still has 24 hours to shop for his brother.

Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukah everyone!
