My Favorite Mountain Bikers

Yesterday, 734’s Dad raced his single-speed in the U.S. Mountain Bike Cup. I really wanted to go, but I had my monthly commitment to the local state park to do my trail patrol. Since I’m injured, Keith and I just hung out by a picnic bench in the parking lot and answered folks’ questions. Truth be told, I was really bummed that I would not only miss his race, but also Melanie McQuaid’s, the three-time XTERRA World Champ.

After his race, his buddy Tim noticed Mel and asked, “Hey, isn’t that the woman we saw on TV yesterday?” 734’s Dad said, “Yeah, the Minnow is a huge fan of hers.” “Well then, come on, let’s go meet her,” he said. She was very approachable as always. And posed for a picture with the legendary Ned Overend and my guy. Does it get any better? This pic was the next best thing to being there.

It was a great day. He won his fourth race of the year. For all his hard work, they gave him a winner’s jersey, a plaque, and some bar ends. I cooked him a nice recovery dinner to celebrate.
